Covid-19 has taken its grip on education.
This has been the first week of attempting distance learning in our school district and districts across the state of Minnesota, even the nation. Here are a few things I have learned this week.
* Most students are responding to messages and work that we provided.
* Many really like knowing what to do from every class and then getting it done quickly.
* I have to up my presentation game with videos or online chats or something.
* I really miss my students.
* I'm concerned about a few of them. Especially the ones that haven't responded to our work or aren't checking in daily with us.
* Sending and receiving all these e-mails and messages is a TON of work. There has to be an easier way.
* My coworkers are outstanding educators and even better people. I knew this before but during this time, it really solidified it for me. They really go above and beyond all expectations. Even the creative level is off the charts.
* My own child really likes how distance learning is going for him. He is a checklist kid. He is motivated to cross it off when it is done.
I am rethinking on how school may look like when we go back. Could this model work while we are all together in the same building? Would this give some students time to work on a passion project? Would those students that struggle have their needs met by joining a class that helps them out? Could we go deeper into the subject matter? Are there more people in the community willing to come in to provide guidance with some project?
Many things to think about. I have time now.
