I was scanning through my blog feed and came across this post.

This got me thinking...again. Does homework really help? I really try to get students to work in class. With the extra time we have this year, there is a lot of time for practice to be completed. Some challenges I get are keeping them on task for the amount of time I use for them to practice the skill we are working with. Some finish early, some finish as class is ending, and some have problems left to complete still at the end.
If I send things home to work on, who is really doing the work?
Do parents expect their child to have homework? If so, are they actively looking for it and working to find out if their child has work to complete? (Not all students are honest and forthcoming when it comes to having homework. Mine included.)
Does anyone look at the homework page we have to check?
Parents come to conferences and comment, " They, (the student) never have any homework. Are they finishing it in school or should I be checking better? I remember when I had homework, I would have to stay up to finish it, no matter how long it took. Maybe that was a trait instilled in me by my parents. Someone gave you a task, you don't stop until it is finished.
I guess I'll try to keep school work in school and give "homework" a title for something else.
